Updating Divi Essential

Category: Getting Started Applies To: Divi Essential (All Plans) Last Updated: April 2026

Why Keeping Divi Essential Updated Matters

Every update to Divi Essential brings one or more of the following:

  • New modules and features
  • Bug fixes for known issues
  • Compatibility patches for the latest version of Divi, WordPress, and PHP
  • Performance improvements under the hood
  • Divi 5 support as it continues to roll out

Running an outdated version is one of the most common causes of module conflicts, broken layouts, and unexpected behavior, especially after WordPress or Divi core updates.

The good news: updating Divi Essential takes less than two minutes.

Before You Update: A Quick Checklist

Never update a plugin on a live site without a quick pre-flight check. This takes 3 minutes and can save hours of troubleshooting.

  • [ ] Back up your site — use your host's backup tool, or a plugin like UpdraftPlus or All-in-One WP Migration
  • [ ] Check the changelog — review what's changed in the new version (link in the update notice or on our website)
  • [ ] Note your current version — go to WordPress Admin → Plugins → find Divi Essential → note the version number

[ ] If possible, test on staging first — especially for major version jumps (e.g., 1.x → 2.x)

Method 1 — Update from the WordPress Plugins Page (Recommended)

This is the standard method for most users.

Step 1: Go to WordPress Admin → Plugins → Installed Plugins

Step 2: Find Divi Essential in the list. If an update is available, you'll see a notice below the plugin name:

"There is a new version of Divi Essential available."

Step 3: Click Update Now

Step 4: Wait for the update to complete. WordPress will show a success confirmation.

Step 5: Verify the update by checking the new version number next to the plugin name.

That's it. In most cases, the update is seamless, and your site continues working normally.

Method 2 — Update from the WordPress Dashboard

Step 1: Go to WordPress Admin → Dashboard → Updates

Step 2: Scroll to the Plugins section. If Divi Essential has an update, it will be listed here with a checkbox.

Step 3: Check the box next to Divi Essential

Step 4: Click Update Plugins

This method is useful if you're updating multiple plugins at once.

Method 3 — Manual Update (Advanced)

If automatic updates aren't working, or you need to install a specific version, you can update manually.

Step 1: Download the latest version of Divi Essential from your account at [divinext.com → purchase history → View Details and Downloads]

Step 2: Go to WordPress Admin → Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin

Step 3: Click Choose File and select the .zip file you downloaded

Step 4: Click Install Now

Step 5: WordPress will detect that the plugin already exists and ask if you want to replace it. Click Replace current with uploaded

Step 6: Once installed, click Activate Plugin

After Updating: What to Do

Once the update is complete, run through these quick steps:

  1. Clear your cache If you're using a caching plugin (WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total Cache, etc.) or a CDN (Cloudflare, BunnyCDN), clear the cache immediately after updating. Old cached files can cause style conflicts with the new version.
  2. Check your key pages Browse through your most important pages — especially any that use Divi Essential modules heavily. Look for anything visually broken or out of place.
  3. Check the Divi Builder Open a page in the Divi Builder and confirm modules load correctly and settings panels open as expected.
  4. Review the changelog If you skipped this before updating, now's a good time. Understanding what changed helps you spot anything new to take advantage of — or anything that may have affected existing behavior.

Troubleshooting Update Issues

The update option isn't showing

This usually means one of the following:

  • You're already on the latest version — check the current version against the latest release on our site
  • Your license isn't connected — go to Divi Essential → Settings → License and verify your license key is active
  • WordPress update cache needs refreshing — go to Dashboard → Updates and click "Check again"

The update broke something

First, don't panic. Here's what to do:

  1. Clear your site cache — this resolves the majority of post-update visual issues
  2. Clear your browser cache — Ctrl+Shift+R (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+R (Mac)
  3. Deactivate and reactivate the plugin — sometimes this refreshes internal settings
  4. Check for Divi core conflicts — if you updated Divi and Divi Essential at the same time, there may be a temporary compatibility issue; check our compatibility notes
  5. Restore from backup — if nothing works and your site is broken, restore from the pre-update backup you took earlier

If the issue persists, contact our support team with your Divi Essential version, Divi version, WordPress version, and PHP version.

Auto-updates keep failing

Check with your hosting provider — some hosts restrict outbound connections that WordPress uses for plugin updates. A manual update (Method 3 above) will always work as a fallback.

Setting Up Automatic Updates (Optional)

If you prefer to have Divi Essential update automatically without manual intervention:

Step 1: Go to WordPress Admin → Plugins → Installed Plugins

Step 2: Find Divi Essential and click Enable auto-updates (the link appears to the right of the plugin row)

⚠️ A note on auto-updates: While convenient, auto-updates mean changes happen without your review. We recommend enabling auto-updates only on sites with automated backups and a staging workflow. For business-critical sites, manual updates with a pre-flight backup are safer.

How to Check Your Current Version

At any time, you can check which version of Divi Essential is installed:

  • From the Plugins page: WordPress Admin → Plugins → Installed Plugins → find Divi Essential → version number is shown below the plugin name

From Divi Essential Settings: WordPress Admin → Divi Essential → Settings → the version is shown in the footer or header of the settings panel

Summary

Updating Divi Essential is a two-minute task with a high payoff. Here's the short version:

  1. Back up your site before updating
  2. Use the standard Plugins page → Update Now method for most updates
  3. Clear your cache immediately after updating
  4. Browse your key pages to confirm everything looks correct

Staying current ensures you get the latest module features, Divi 5 compatibility patches, and the most stable experience possible.
